Location: Campus Sint-Lucas - Ghentis a creative hub of nearly 5,000 people: over 4,000 students and 800 staff members. It offers a dynamic educational and research environment in which creative talent can flourish. LUCA provides higher education across and supports at all levels. This research is embedded within the KU Leuven framework, where LUCA forms part of the associated Faculty of the Arts in the Humanities Group. All researchers in the arts are members of this faculty. Nearly 150 lecturers, postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, and project staff are currently engaged in artistic research in fields such as audiovisual arts, visual arts, design, music, and drama.The Art & Materiality expertise team at Campus Sint-Lucas Ghent is offering a position for a candidate interested in pursuing doctoral research in the arts, embedded in the Visual Arts programme. The team’s teaching and research explore both technical/formal and conceptual aspects of artistic practice. It brings together lecturers and assistants with a wide range of expertise in the visual arts, including painting, textile design, and sculpture.The anticipated start date for the position is 2 February 2026.AssignmentWithin a research assignment of 50% you will carry out a PhD trajectory in the arts, supervised by prof. dr. Chris Evans. As a member of a diverse group of artists and researchers, you will contribute to a consideration of how the act of making speaks with and against the limits of matter and how we might consider a poetics of materiality to reveal the unconscious of our contemporary condition.In addition, you will have a 30% teaching assignment. This will include teaching responsibilities embedded within the Visual Arts programme and may also involve administrative, supportive, and organisational duties related to education. You will be jointly responsible for helping students develop both theoretical and practical (technical) skills.Your appointment as a researcher can only begin once your PhD proposal has been approved by the Doctoral Committee in the Arts (LUCA – Associated Faculty of the Arts, KU Leuven). Approval by the Doctoral Committee in the Arts follows after you have completed the application procedure for this position.Candidate Profile
  • You have an active artistic practice in the visual arts
  • You are experienced in working with materials such as glass and ceramics
  • You have a track record in exhibiting and practice-based-research
  • Teaching experience in an art education context is considered an asset
  • You hold a Masters degree in a field relevant to the research.
  • You possess social and educational skills, are collegial, and committed to ongoing development. You act with respect and integrity, in line with LUCA’s code of conduct.
  • You are able to teach in Dutch or English and are willing to acquire a good command of both languages if needed. LUCA provides training opportunities to support this.
