We work with charitable foundations and regional climate foundations to support a diverse set of research institutions, think tanks and civil society organisations working with governments, business and other parts of society all over the world. We aim to back local organisations and international partners to overcome the barriers to clean energy and steel. PIE was formed in 2013 and is hosted at the European Climate Foundation (ECF). PIE is comprised of a small and dedicated international team of exceptional people based around the world. More at www.pieclimate.org.PositionAbout the role:We are looking for a dynamic and innovative collaborator to join the PIE Africa programme as Head of South Africa. This role will be part of the PIE Africa team, working closely with the team, peer partners and networks across various fronts to advance a just energy transition in South Africa. PIE has more than a decade of experience working with partners in South Africa. The postholder for this role will care passionately about climate action and clean energy and strengthening the capacities of clean power allies, including civil society organisations, to shape the way forward. You will have a strong knowledge of and deep interest in the energy sector and the policy environment of climate. You will value the grassroots, public campaigning, technical analysis, working with government, diplomacy and all sectors of the economy in equal measure. You will be a brilliant leader, partner empowerer, strategist and networker and have the instincts to be a responsible grant-maker and partner to our network.Key responsibilities:
  • Strategy implementation and project management: lead the strategy implementation for South Africa, to align with PIE Africa Programme's goals, priorities, and budget; codevelop and implement strategies with our network of grantees and partners; proactively review developments that may impact the operating context or PIE Africa Programme, and continuously adapt and revise strategies and tactics.
  • Grant-making: manage the grant-making for South Africa; identify relevant grantees in coordination/collaboration with PIE team colleagues; lead or support the liaison with grantees; monitor and evaluate progress and impact of grants; help to strengthen grantee capacities (where necessary); develop and incubate new partnerships, initiatives and organizations in South Africa (where necessary); take the analytical products developed by grantees and help draw links between them and encourage collaboration; ensure the entire grant-making cycle complies with PIE's internal procedures and standards.
  • Forward-looking research activities: compile, research and analyse topic areas which are necessary to deliver PIE Africa's goals; scope the landscape and identify opportunities on emerging topics.
  • Coordination and communication: liaise and explore joint opportunities with existing and potential grantees, partners and networks, and other relevant or connected programmes inside PIE; ensure proper and timely dissemination of information, and consistency and complementarity of different projects.
  • Network development: build regional partnerships across the policymaking, business, finance, media, academic and civil society communities active on the energy transition objectives.
  • Funder relations: support PIE team members in generating material necessary for fundraising; build and maintain strong relationships with funders; act as a liaison to report regular progress to funders.
RequirementsExperience and competencies:Professional:
  • At least 6 years of relevant professional experience bringing about change through, for example, advocacy, network mobilization, public campaigning, or inside an agency, business, or government setting;
  • A strong up-to-date knowledge of South Africa's power sector challenges and opportunities;
  • An understanding of international climate policy is desirable;
  • Excellent skills and experience in strategic thinking and an ability to translate strategy into implementation;
  • Evidence of strong analytical, research and numerical skills.
Communication Skills & Networking:
  • Fluency in English. Professional working proficiency in English.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications, with the ability to crystallise complex issues into effective and readable strategy documents;
  • Excellence in networking including demonstrable ability to maintain trusting professional relationships across different sectors, a diverse group of partners, including many working in different cultural contexts;
  • Ability to connect and build high-trust relationships with local grassroot groups, communities, NGOs, think tanks, academia, governments etc.

  • Enthusiasm and commitment to the mission of PIE;
  • Willingness to travel nationally, regionally and internationally when circumstances allow (+/- 20%)
  • A commitment to empowering local leadership and to capacity building local institutions;
  • A demonstrable ability to self-manage and self-organise establishing your own workspace and schedule. High efficiency as an individual and in a team is essential.
